Welcome

The Deaf Scene is a website made to empower and amplify deaf voices in the entertainment scene, as well as inform the hearing community of their daily struggles. Read along to learn more about this vibrant community, what I am doing to advocate, and what you can do, too, to make the deaf seen.

DEAF VOICES IN ENTERTAINMENT

While there are over 11 million deaf individuals in the US, they are often misrepresented in the media and are seldom cast to play deaf roles. While this has improved over the years with shows and movies like CODA, it is important to recognize how much more work is needed to secure their fair representation and acknowledge how the deaf community has been frequently portrayed in the media.

UNIVERSAL LOVE FOR MEDIA

It's what makes us human; the possibility to connect with others like ourselves and live many lives all at once. Whether it be through watching TV, movies, reading books, or scrolling on social media, the entertainment industry in countries like the United States prevails.I myself love entertainment. I can’t wait to start binging a new show after I finish one. I love participating in discourse about those shows, movies, and books that I love and it makes me happy to know others love them, too. And I most certainly love rewatching clips of my favorite shows on social media as I reminisce about how amazing it was to watch the show or read the book for the first time. I, like many other entertainment lovers know much about our favorite actors, actresses, and directors. We are filled with excitement when learning that our favorite actors are starring in something soon because we know just how good it’ll be. The cycle of being entertained by Entertainment is never-ending, and I appreciate it. Yet, the entertainment industry is far from perfect.

No matter who you are, we all love bringing our favorite shows and movies and reading our comfort books. There are many groups of people who feel ashamed and embarrassed of who they are because of the entertainment industry. One of those groups of people is the deaf community. They are seldom portrayed in entertainment and when they are, it is often incorrect. How can we enjoy entertainment for all it does for us when deaf individuals have been outcasted from enjoying the same experiences as us?

ABOUT ME

image.png

Hey all, I'm Ndioba! I am a high school student who created this website to advocate for better deaf representation in all things media-related. I decided to create this website as I love indulging in books, movies, and TV shows as well as learning of diverse groups of people. It's interesting---the entertainment scene is what made me aware of the deaf community, but also aware of how much exclusion they face. Join me in my journey to inform more hearing people of the deaf communites sturggles in the media scene and out.

True Biz by Sara Novic

This book is about a deaf main character Charlie who has a faulty implant and goes to a chool for the deaf. At that school, she meets more deaf people for the first time in her life such as a boy named Austin. I really enjoyed this book because it explores the difficulty of navigating life as a deaf individual when you don't know anyone else like you, and the importance of having a community. I also love coming of age books, and Novic does a great job of balancing the sad, the funny, and the interesting!
